Gray's Meadow



My Dad and I went fishing for Father's Day, camping at Gray's Meadow just outside of Independence, CA in the eastern Sierra. As we drove in on Friday we discovered that the town was holding their annual fishing derby on Saturday. While we had flash-forwards of our campsite by the creek being over-run by fisherpeople eager to win the derby, we had little to fear. Independence can claim a lack of crowds even during an annual event.

The interesting thing about this fishing derby was that they stocked the stream with huge trout the day before the event. So as we were fishing into a pool near our campsite, a guy from Alpers Trout Company came up and threw 6 big trout into our pool. While it started to feel a bit like we were fishing in an aquarium, we quickly learned that just because you can see a huge fish, it doesn't mean that it will take your bait (ours was salmon eggs, by the way).

After seeing people walking around with strings full of fish, we started asking what they were using. A quick trip back to town for "orange power bait", and we caught a nice big tasty trout for dinner:
